The Gap Year

Local people, local mission

We are passionate about the Gospel reaching more of the North East of England and about disciples of Christ being well-supported. The gap year will equip you with skills, knowledge, and spiritual maturity that can help further God’s Kingdom purposes in our area. We hope students will remain in the North East serving God in whatever is next for them, including work, further training, and ministry.

Every gap year student’s placement is unique, and we aim to match the student’s gifts and interests with a local church or Christian agency’s similar needs. You’ll learn new skills, be challenged, and be invested in and mentored by those around you. Past placements have included worship ministry and work with kids, youth, students, and internationals. You’ll also have a chance to serve the local community once a week alongside other Equip gap year students. Serving is work, but it can also be loads of fun and a great opportunity to grow in your faith.

Theology & Ministry Training

Equip will provide practical and interactive training that is accredited by Moorlands College.* Through placements, weekly training & discipleship, community outreach, a conference, and a residential, you will have a better understanding of the Bible, how theology makes a difference in everyday life and ministry, creative ways of doing mission, and how you are uniquely gifted to serve. (For more information about what is covered in each module, click here.)

We also welcome those who would like to join us for just the Theology & Ministry Training one day each week. To apply for the training course only (not the gap year), click here.

Hopefully, all of this will build a solid foundation that will enrich your future ministries and relationships with God and others. You won’t know what God has in store for you until you take the leap!

*Accreditation is an A level standard certificate in “Engaging with Applied Theology”

What does a typical week look like for Gap Year students?

Monday – “Hub Day” with other Equip gap year students – you’ll spend time building community and growing in your faith through prayer, worship, and discipleship. For half of the day, you’ll be out together serving and blessing the community in various ways.

Tuesday / Wednesday / Friday – Placement Days – each student will be in a uniquely designed placement with a North East church or Christian organisation. (You’ll have a block of time off if some of your placement hours happen on Sunday.)

Thurs – Theology & Ministry Training Day – gap year students and those doing the “Theology Only” option with Equip will join together for training accredited by Moorlands College.

Sat – Day off – enjoy it & rest up!

Sun – Attend church and enjoy some extra time off (or serve some of your placement hours if applicable).
